Why headlights fail in Nevada.
Modern headlight lenses are made of polycarbonate plastic — light, impact-resistant, and originally clear-coated with a UV-protective layer at the factory. That UV coating is sacrificial. In a milder climate it lasts 8–10 years. In Pahrump and the wider Mojave region, with year-round high-UV exposure and intense summer surface temperatures, that coating can be largely gone in 3–5 years on a daily-parked vehicle.
Once the UV layer is breached, the polycarbonate underneath starts oxidizing. The lens fogs, yellows, and develops a hazy texture that scatters light instead of focusing it forward. Beyond the cosmetic damage, a yellowed lens can reduce effective headlight output by 40–60% — a real safety issue on dark Nevada highways.
The methodical restoration process.
- Mask & protect. The surrounding paint and trim are masked with automotive tape to protect against the sanding stages.
- Wet-sand, progressive grits. Starting at 800 grit (or coarser for severely damaged lenses) and stepping up through 1500, 2000, and 3000 grit, we level the oxidized surface and refine it back toward optical clarity.
- Compound and polish. A cutting compound followed by a finishing polish brings the lens to a fully transparent, glass-like surface — visually identical to a new factory lens.
- UV sealant. A dedicated headlight UV-protective coating is applied to replace the worn factory layer. This is the step shop-grade restorations include and amateur kits skip — it's the difference between results that last six months and results that last six weeks.
- Inspection. Beam test in the parking lot at dusk to confirm output, photo log of before/after.
